5. Putting chocolate on the map

What’s linked a British and Irish factory with an African country for 100 years? Chocolate.

In 1879 the Cadbury brothers built a ‘factory in a garden’ in the Birmingham countryside. They designed Bournville to give their workers better conditions, creating a community. The same philosophies have been applied throughout Ireland and beyond.

The brothers also believed in treating their suppliers fairly. We’ve followed in their footsteps. We’ve invested in Ghanaian cocoa communities, helping with everything from agricultural training to a library building programme. In 2008, we’re digging a well a day throughout Ghana to give more people easy access to clean drinking water.
